Donsol is a small Sorsogon town on the Donsol River, about 2 km from the beach strip at Barangay Dancalan, where the visitor centre, dive shops and most resorts sit. It is known for butanding (whale sharks), firefly river tours and diving at Manta Bowl. Two nights covers a boat trip and a river tour; three nights adds diving. Whale-shark sightings have fallen sharply since the 2010s, so treat any boat trip as a gamble, not a booking.

Watch out

Safety

Donsol is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are cash (few ATMs, poor exchange rates), unguaranteed whale-shark trips, and wet-season closures. Use 911 for emergencies.
  • Whale-shark sightings are not guaranteed and have dropped sharply; operators still run boats and give no refunds or credits.
  • Cash only at most resorts and dive shops: two ATMs in Donsol take Visa and Mastercard, and money-changing rates can be poor.
  • Many resorts and hotels open only in whale-shark season (Dec–May); check before booking outside it.
  • Stray and sick dogs have been reported around some beach resorts; ask if this matters to you.
  • Boat trips follow strict interaction rules: no touching, keep distance, one boat per shark.
