  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Alamosa is a town of about 8,800 people on US 160 and US 285 in the San Luis Valley, 230 road miles from Denver. It exists for travellers as the service base for Great Sand Dunes National Park and the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Two nights covers the dunes at sunrise and one other stop; the town itself is a Main Street strip of motels and Mexican restaurants. Winter nights here are among the coldest recorded in the contiguous United States, so check the forecast before you come between December and February and pack warm layers.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need a car. The dunes entrance is about 35 min northwest on CO 150, Zapata Falls about 40 min, the Gator Farm and Hooper hot springs 25–30 min out. There is no useful local bus for these trips; fuel up in Alamosa before heading out.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Great Sand Dunes National Park

go

Door to door: About 35–40 min from downtown

Drive US 160 west, then CO 150 north to the entrance

Go at sunrise or after 16:00 in summer; sand surface temperature can exceed 60 °C at midday. Entry fee per vehicle, 2026 estimate.

Zapata Falls

go

Door to door: About 45 min

CO 150 to the small green sign, then a rough dirt road to the trailhead

Half-mile trail, then wade a shallow creek into the slot to see the falls; free, open year round, no facilities beyond a restroom.

Colorado Gator Farm, Mosca

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive CO 17 north from Alamosa

Alligator and reptile park with a rescue operation; a niche stop, best with kids. Check seasonal hours and admission.

Sand Dunes Swimming Pool, Hooper

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive north on CO 17 to Hooper

Artesian hot-spring pool; a therapy pool runs hotter. Check the current schedule before you drive out — days and hours change. Bring or rent a towel.

Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, Antonito

go

Door to door: About 40 min to the depot

Drive US 285 south to Antonito, about 30 miles

Full-day steam train toward Chama, New Mexico, with round-trip or bus-return options. Reservations are required; check the current schedule and return transport.

Jack Dempsey Museum, Manassa

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Drive south via US 285 and CO 142

Small birthplace museum; summer hours only.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Main Street (US 160) strip

Most motels and chain hotels sit on or just off Main; walkable to restaurants, drive to the dunes.

Downtown Main Street core

Brewery, coffeehouse and Mexican restaurants within a few blocks; quieter at night.

Mosca and the park road (CO 150)

Closest point to the dunes, about 30–40 min drive; lodging here is limited — check availability before you count on it.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town with no street-crime pattern worth planning around. The real risks are altitude, summer heat on the dunes, monsoon lightning, winter cold and long empty drives: carry water, fuel and a warm layer.
  • Altitude: town sits near 2,300 m; the dunes and Zapata Falls trails are higher. Drink water and take day one easy.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms build over the Sangre de Cristo in July and August; be off exposed sand and out of the creek bed by early afternoon.
  • Winter lows can drop below -25 °C; keep a blanket, food and water in the car.
  • Cell signal is patchy on CO 150 and the Zapata Falls road.
  • Medano Creek flow and park road conditions change by season: check the NPS site before you drive.
