Concord, New HampshireConcord

Give Concord one full day on foot for the State House and Main Street, or skip it and use it as a cheap overnight stop between Boston and the White Mountains.

Concord is a small state capital of about 43,000 people, 1 h 15 min by bus or 1 h by car from Boston. The draw is the New Hampshire State House — the oldest state house in the US where the legislature still meets in its original chambers — plus a compact Main Street of bookshops, bakeries and a science museum. It is not a destination in itself; it works as a half-day stop or a base for the Merrimack Valley and the White Mountains.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable in 15–20 min end to end. Concord Area Transit (CAT) runs local buses; taxis and rideshare are thin, so a car helps for the Discovery Center, Pierce Manse and day trips. Concord Coach Lines connects the Transportation Center at 30 Stickney Ave with Boston and other New Hampshire towns.

Watch out

Safety

Concord is a low-crime small city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements and roads, deer on I-93 and I-89 at dusk, and thin late-night transport — plan your ride before you go out.
  • Winter driving: ice and snow on I-93 and I-89 from Nov to Mar.
  • Downtown parking is metered on weekdays; check signs before leaving the car.
  • Many small restaurants and museums keep short hours or close one or two weekdays: check before you go.
  • Rideshare coverage is limited outside the centre; book a taxi if you are out late.
