Naantali is a small wooden town 17 km from Turku, on the edge of the Archipelago Sea. It is one of Finland's six medieval towns, and its summer identity comes from a 19th-century spa, the president's summer residence at Kultaranta and Moomin World. Outside June–August much of it closes, so treat it as a warm-season stop of one night, or a half-day from Turku.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: old town, church, harbour and Moomin World are all within about 20 minutes on foot. Föli buses (lines 6, 6A, 201, 203) run from Turku in about 30 min, with a two-hour free transfer inside the Föli area. Municipal N-lines reach Luonnonmaa, Merimasku, Rymättylä and Velkua, but some run only on school days: check weekend and summer timetables. Passenger trains no longer serve Naantali; the nearest railhead is Turku.

Watch out

Safety

Naantali is a small, low-crime town and safe for tourists. The real risks are seasonal closures, the unguarded drop at Kuparivuori, cold water at the beaches and summer crowds around Moomin World.
  • Many sights and restaurants are seasonal: outside June–August expect closures, so check opening dates before you book.
  • Kultaranta tours run Jun–Aug, daily except Monday, and require advance booking; they sell out.
  • Moomin World is a dated-ticket park with a short season: buy online before you travel.
  • The old town is people's homes: do not walk into yards or gardens.
  • Kuparivuori hill has a vertical drop to the strait with no barriers or safety equipment.
  • The biggest sailing yachts cannot enter the guest harbour because of the bridges (highest clearance 16.5 m, shortest route 11 m).
