Friday Harbor is the main town on San Juan Island and the ferry landing for the whole island group: about 2,200 residents, one walkable main street, and the fastest way to reach orca water. Almost everything sits within 15 minutes of the dock, so most trips work without a car. Two nights is the sweet spot — one for the town and a boat trip, one for the national park — and summer weekends need a ferry reservation or a long wait.

Getting around

Walk: the ferry landing, Front Street, the Whale Museum and most restaurants sit within 15 minutes on foot. San Juan Transit runs a seasonal loop to Roche Harbor and island sights, about hourly 9:00–18:00 in summer, less often off-season; single boarding, return and day-pass fares are posted on their site. Rental cars are limited and sell out in summer — reserve ahead. Bikes work on the flat town streets but the island's main roads are narrow and shoulderless in places.

Safety

Very safe for a US small town; the real risks are ferry waits, cold water, wind on the outer coast and thin winter services. Lock the car and keep valuables off the dock.
  • Ferry reservations are recommended for cars, and summer weekend waits can run to several hours: book and arrive 60–90 min before sailing.
  • Walk-on passengers should be at the terminal about 30 min before departure.
  • The Sidney (BC)–Anacortes route via Friday Harbor is suspended and not expected back before 2030: do not plan a Canada–island ferry.
  • Boaters arriving from Canada must clear customs at the customs dock before any other stop; fines for skipping it run high.
  • Summer lodging and whale trips sell out weeks ahead; winter many businesses close or cut hours.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the outer island roads.
