Go for one night only if you want Aavasaksa hill, salmon fishing or a quiet river stop between Tornio and Rovaniemi; otherwise skip.
Ylitornio is a small Tornio river municipality in western Finnish Lapland, about 4,000 residents, with one headline sight: Aavasaksa hill, a 242 m viewpoint and UNESCO Struve Geodetic Arc point that has drawn visitors since the 19th century. There is no local bus network, so you need a car or a coach that drops you in the centre. Most travellers pass through on the E8 between Tornio (57 km south) and Rovaniemi, or stop for river fishing and birdwatching lakes in the northeast villages.

- The Aavasaksa border crossing to Sweden (Övertorneå) is patrol-only since 2016; do customs declarations online.
