Manorhamilton is a small market town in north County Leitrim, 26 km east of Sligo and the only town of size between Lough Allen and the coast. Its own sights are thin — a burnt-out 1630s castle shell and a ruined church — but it sits inside a district of lakes, waterfalls, court tombs and border villages that needs a car to reach. Treat it as a quiet one-night stop on the Sligo–Enniskillen road, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The town itself is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Everything else in the district — Glenade, Glencar, Glenfarne, Kiltyclogher, Rossinver, Tullaghan — is on back lanes with no bus service, so you need your own car. Bus Éireann 458 runs along the N16 corridor roughly every two hours between Sligo and Enniskillen, and Local Link 567 links Carrick-on-Shannon via Drumshanbo four times a day. There is no taxi based in town; one has to come from Sligo or Carrick.

The waterfall is the main sight; the lake straddles the Sligo border and a trail leads up Benbulbin.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track unlit lanes, rain and wind on exposed ground, and driving after a pub evening in a place with no taxi. Tell someone your route if you walk the mountains.

  • Back lanes are single-track with passing places, unlit and often unsigned; drive them in daylight.
  • The N16 border crossing into County Fermanagh puts you in the UK: currency changes to pounds and mobile roaming rules may differ.
