InnisfailInnisfail, Alberta

Give Innisfail one night, not a base: it is a 35 km (22 mi) stop off Highway 2 between Calgary and Edmonton, best used for the wildlife park and a brewery.

Innisfail is a town of about 7,800 people on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, 35 km south of Red Deer, about 120 km north of Calgary and 185 km south of Edmonton. It sits in the parkland belt between the foothills and the open prairie, so the draw is farmland, a wildlife park and a small historic core rather than a city centre. Most travellers see it as a fuel-and-sleep stop on the Calgary–Edmonton run, or as a half-day for the Discovery Wildlife Park and the Danish Canadian Museum.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 30 km of farmland and the highway strip is not walkable to the centre. Taxis serve Innisfail, Red Deer and Sylvan Lake. Highway 2 is the main north–south route; Highway 2A and Highway 587 reach the rural sites.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 2, long empty stretches between rural sights, and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk.
  • Distances between rural sights are long: plan fuel and food before you leave town.
  • Winter driving on Highway 2 can turn icy fast; check road conditions before a night drive.
  • Some farm shops and museums are seasonal and close outside summer: check before you drive out.
