Senmonorom is the small capital of Mondulkiri, Cambodia's hill province, at about 800 m. It is cooler than Phnom Penh, especially at night, and the reason to come is outside town: the Elephant Valley Project and Mondulkiri Project sanctuaries, Borsa waterfall, Bunong villages and dirt-road riding. The town itself is a market, a roundabout and a main street of guesthouses. Roads in are rough and slow, so most people give it 2–3 nights and treat the travel days as lost.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Rent a motorbike or dirt bike for the waterfalls and villages (about US$8 a day); bicycles work for the flat lanes near town. Tuk-tuks and moto-dops handle short hops for US$1–3. Guided tours sold by guesthouses cover the same sights with a driver who knows the tracks.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are the drive in, unlit dirt roads after dark and untreated medical problems far from a hospital. Keep valuables out of sight at the market and wear a helmet on any motorbike.
  • The road from Phnom Penh is potholed and slow; a 7 h minivan ride is normal, and some operators have poor safety records — check reviews before you book.
  • The north road to Banlung is passable in the dry season but bad in the wet; the long way round via Kratie is safer.
  • Do not book elephant riding. The sanctuaries here are observation-only, and riding is the practice they exist to replace.
  • Logging and poaching have thinned the forest: expect few animals on treks, and ask what a tour actually supports.
  • Nights at 800 m get cold in the dry season — bring a layer.
  • Medical care is basic; for anything serious you are going to Phnom Penh.
