Gairloch is a scattered crofting and fishing village on the west coast of Ross and Cromarty, 620 people spread along the shore of Loch Gairloch. The coast, the museum in a Cold War bunker and Inverewe Garden are the reasons to come; the single Westerbus to Inverness is the only way in without a car, and it runs once a day, Monday to Saturday. Two nights is the useful minimum, three if you want a boat trip and a walk.

Getting around

You need a car. There is no local public transport apart from Westerbus 705, a school-day service from Torridon that returns in the afternoon. Fuel up in Dingwall or Inverness: filling stations here are few and prices are higher.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime rural area; the real risks are single-track driving, midges in summer, patchy phone signal and long distances to a hospital. Inverness is the nearest major hospital.
  • Midges are worst on still, damp evenings from June to August; bring repellent and cover up.
  • Single-track roads with passing places: pull in for faster traffic and never park in a passing place.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the approach roads and there is no Three coverage; download maps and tickets before you leave.
  • Most sights and several places to eat close from November to March; check before you book a winter trip.
  • Wild camping is legal in Scotland under the access code, but camp away from the road and leave no trace.
