Cartagena is the Murcia region's port and its second city, built over three millennia of Mediterranean empires: a Roman theatre dug out of a hillside, a Byzantine wall, a modernist street of Gaudí pupils and a working naval harbour. It is compact enough to walk in a day, but the museums and the Roman sites justify two nights, and it works as a cruise-free base for the Mar Menor and the region's interior.

Getting around

The old town, port and Roman sites are walkable in 20–30 min end to end. Municipal buses (ALSA) cover the wider city, and the Renfe Cercanías line runs from the centre to Los Nietos on the Mar Menor. A panoramic lift connects the port area with the castle hill.

Safety

Cartagena is a normal mid-size Spanish city and safe for tourists by day and night in the centre. The real risks are summer heat, pickpockets around the port and shopping streets, and beach swimming outside the Mar Menor.
  • Summer heat: plan museum and indoor time for 13:00–17:00.
  • Cruise-ship days fill the Roman theatre and Calle Mayor — book timed entries and eat early or late.
  • Pickpockets around the port and busy shopping streets; keep bags zipped.
  • Some restaurants close in the afternoon and on Sundays outside the tourist zone.
  • Beach swimming near the port and naval area is not the same as the Mar Menor beaches — check locally.
