HuachinangoHuauchinango

Go for one night, two if you want the waterfalls: colonial centre on foot in half a day, Cascadas la Morena and Lake Necaxa by taxi.

Huachinango is a Pueblo Mágico in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, about 2 h 30 min by bus from Mexico City. The centre is small, hilly and walkable: a zócalo with arcades, two colonial churches and a 16th-century Augustinian monastery. The reason to add a night is outside town — seven waterfalls at Cascadas la Morena and the Lake Necaxa shoreline restaurants. Two nights covers both without rushing; one night is enough if you only want the town.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Getting around

The Centro is compact but steep: cobblestones and staircases between the zócalo, the churches and the scenic park. Walk it. Taxis wait at a sitio beside the zócalo and are the practical way to reach Cascadas la Morena, Lake Necaxa and the highway hotels; agree the fare before you get in. No metro or city bus network worth using as a visitor.

Cascadas la Morena

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way with taxi wait

Taxi from the zócalo along MEX 130 toward Mexico City, about 20 min

Seven waterfalls, about 5 km (3.1 mi) of marked trails, a suspension bridge and a path behind one fall. Easy to moderate; go in the morning, bring cash for entry and food.

Lake Necaxa (Presa Necaxa)

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Taxi or car about 4 km (2.5 mi) north of town

Lakeside restaurants and boat or fishing trips; a half-day, best at lunch.

Tenango de las Flores reservoir

caution

Door to door: About 40 min

Taxi or car north of town

Quiet dam and reservoir; the draw is the 1957 film Tizoc, which was shot here. Only worth it if you have a car or a driver for the day.

Xicotepec

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus or car on MEX 130

Another Sierra Norte town; easy to combine as a half-day.

Zacatlán

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Car or bus via MEX 119

Apple orchards and a clock museum; better as a night than a return trip.

Door to door: About 2 h

Futura or ADO bus from the Huachinango terminal

Several buses a day; the state capital is the natural next stop.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro (around the zócalo)

Colonial hotels on and near Portal Hidalgo and Miguel Hidalgo; everything in town is a walk away. Best for one night without a car.

MEX 130 corridor (El Paraíso, Catalina)

Highway-side hotels with parking and pools, 5–10 min by taxi from the centre. Best with a car or for the waterfalls.

Watch out

Safety

The centre is calm and walkable by day and early evening; the usual cautions apply after dark on quiet streets. Use sitio taxis, keep to the main roads at night, and treat the highway and waterfall trails with normal care — wet rocks, no lifeguards, patchy phone signal.
  • Streets are cobbled, narrow and hilly; wear shoes with grip and expect stairs.
  • Summer afternoons bring heavy rain and slick cobbles; trails at the waterfalls get muddy.
  • Some hotels have no air conditioning and rooms warm up in May and June.
  • Carnaval and the Easter fairs fill the town: book a room ahead or avoid those weeks.
  • At the waterfalls and lakes, confirm the taxi return or keep a local number — there is no rank waiting out there.
