Epe is an Ijebu-Yoruba town on the north bank of the Lekki Lagoon, about 181,000 people, and the fish-trading and boat-building centre of Lagos State. It works as a one-night break from Lagos: a working fish market, mangrove creek rides and a handful of resorts. Sights are thin, so treat it as a slow day out, not a sightseeing city.

Watch out

Safety

Epe is a small, low-crime town by Lagos standards and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real issues are unlit roads at night, okada riding, occasional ceremony curfews and corrupt checkpoints: go out in groups, keep to known routes and carry cash.
  • Traditional ceremonies can bring an overnight curfew with little notice: ask locally before a night out.
  • Some police checkpoints are corrupt; keep to known routes and use a trusted driver.
  • Carry cash: local markets and most small traders have no card machine.
  • Change money in Lagos, not on the street in Epe, and count it in front of the exchanger.
  • Okada are the fastest way around and the riskiest; helmets are not standard.
