Bouaké

One night is enough to see the cathedral and eat attiéké; use it as a stop between Abidjan and Korhogo, not a base.

Bouaké is Côte d'Ivoire's second city and the commercial hub of the Eastern Plantations region. Its main draw is the brutalist St. Teresa's Cathedral and the chance to eat attiéké and grilled fish in a maquis. Most travellers pass through in a day or one night on the way north or south.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.

Watch out

Safety

Bouaké is generally safe for daytime travel. The main risks are potholed roads at night and pickpocketing in crowded markets. Keep valuables out of sight.
  • The road from Yamoussoukro has deep potholes: drive carefully and avoid night travel.
  • Train schedules from Abidjan are unreliable: check at the station the day before.
  • French is essential; English is not widely spoken.
