Reguengos de Monsaraz is a municipality in the Alto Alentejo, on the right bank of the Guadiana near the Spanish border. Its draw is the walled village of Monsaraz, a hilltop of white houses and a castle keep above the Alqueva reservoir, plus a scatter of megalithic stones in the surrounding fields. The town of Reguengos itself is a working market town with wine estates, not a sight. Most travellers come for one night, or as a long day-trip from Évora, and the region rewards a car.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the village, the menhirs and the wineries are spread over 15–25 km of back roads. Without one, buses reach Reguengos town but not Monsaraz village reliably, so plan a taxi or a tour from Évora. Inside Monsaraz everything is on foot, on steep cobbles.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are summer heat, unlit rural roads at night and steep cobbles in Monsaraz after rain: wear shoes with grip and carry water.
  • Monsaraz village is small and fills up on weekends and holidays: book a bed before you drive out.
  • Summer heat is serious: 38–40 °C in July and August, little shade between the stones.
  • The Alqueva shoreline and some rural roads are unlit at night; drive slowly for livestock and deer.
  • Many village restaurants close one day a week and shut the kitchen by 21:30: check before you rely on one.
