Patzcuaro is the market town and transport hub of Lake Patzcuaro in Michoacán, at about 2,200 m. The centre is small and walkable — two plazas, a basilica, a library with a Juan O'Gorman mural — and the reason to stay is the ring of Purépecha villages around the lake. Two nights covers the town and two villages; Day of the Dead is the one time the town itself is the destination.

Getting around

The centre is flat enough to walk between the two plazas in 5–10 minutes. Taxis and combis (collective vans) run to the villages; most combis leave from Plaza Chica. Boats to Janitzio leave from the main dock.

Watch out

Safety

Patzcuaro is a calm, walkable town and the usual caution applies: use taxis after dark, keep to lit streets, and check current state-level travel advice for Michoacán before you drive the lake roads.
  • Day of the Dead: book a room weeks ahead, arrive before noon, and expect blocked-in parking near the docks.
  • Altitude is about 2,200 (≈ US$120) m — take the first day slowly if you flew in from sea level.
  • June–September afternoons bring heavy rain; carry a shell and do sights in the morning.
  • Village roads around the lake are narrow and unlit at night; avoid driving after dark.
