Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Roermond sits where the Meuse and Rur meet, in Limburg, about 30 minutes by train from both Eindhoven and Maastricht. Two things pull visitors: a compact, car-free historic centre with a Gothic cathedral and Romanesque church, and the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, one of the country's biggest shopping draws. The Maasplassen lake district around it is the largest water-sports area in the Netherlands. Most people come for a day of shopping and a walk, and one night is enough unless you are here for the water.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old centre is car-free and small enough to cross on foot in 15 minutes. Roermond station is a 5–10 minute walk from the Markt; the Designer Outlet is about a 15-minute walk from the station, with shuttle buses between outlet, centre and car parks. Regional trains (Arriva) and intercities (NS) link Roermond with Eindhoven, Maastricht, Heerlen, Venlo, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Buses run from the station square to surrounding villages and the lakes.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town around Markt and Munsterplein

Walk to cathedral, city hall and restaurants; the pick for one night without a car.

Roerkade / riverfront

Hotels along the Roer near the centre; quiet at night, 5–10 min walk to the Markt.

Outlet and Maasplassen edge

Chain hotels and resort stays by the lakes; needs a bus, bike or car to reach the centre.

Watch out

Safety

The centre is fine by day and early evening, but local sources report more muggings and burglaries than in most Dutch towns: stay in lit streets after dark, avoid unlit riverside paths, and keep phones and bags out of sight in outlet crowds.
  • Local sources report a higher crime rate than in most Dutch towns, with muggings and burglaries; stay alert outside the lit centre at night and keep bags zipped in crowds.
  • Outlet car parks and the station area are the busiest spots for pickpockets on sale weekends.
  • Shops in the centre and the outlet open on Sundays, which is unusual in the Netherlands; most other Dutch towns do not.
  • Summer terraces and lake beaches fill up; book a table or a boat slot ahead on weekends.
