Nkhata Bay is a fishing town of about 15,000 on a steep bay of Lake Malawi, 45–50 km from Mzuzu and the north's main backpacker base. The water is the point: clear freshwater, cichlids, cheap diving and cliff jumps. Two or three nights covers it; the town itself is walkable in an hour.

Getting around
The town is small and walkable; the walk between the centre and the southern lodges takes 20–30 min on a steep road. Water taxis and lodge boats cover the bay, and lodges run vehicles into town for supplies. Minibuses leave the town centre for Mzuzu through the day.

Watch out
Safety
- Walk in company after dark, especially on the road between town and the southern lodges.
- Men posing as curio sellers or offering marijuana have been linked to police shakedowns; refuse and keep walking.
- Freshwater exposure carries a bilharzia risk and lodges' "bilharzia-free" claims are not reliable: see a clinician about testing and treatment after you swim, not before.
- The Ilala ferry calls twice a week, arriving around midnight — confirm the 2026 timetable before you plan around it.
- There is no road north of Nkhata Bay; onward travel is by boat or back through Mzuzu.
