Marietta is Ohio's oldest city, founded in 1788 at the meeting of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, and the county seat of Washington County. The historic downtown is compact and walkable but climbs uphill from the river. Most visitors come for one night as a stop on a Southeast Ohio loop, or as a base for the sternwheeler and the river museums.
