White Sulphur Springs is a town of about 2,400 people built around a single property: The Greenbrier, a 6,500-acre resort that has hosted US presidents since the 1800s and hid a Cold War bunker for Congress underneath. Outside the resort gates there is a small main street, a 1931 train depot and not much else. Come for the resort, the bunker tour or the Amtrak stop; do not come expecting a town to wander.

Getting around

You need a car for anything outside the resort. US-60 and WV-92 cover the town centre; I-64 runs parallel for longer hops. Mountain Transit Authority runs a daily bus with two stops in town, roughly hourly (check current timetable). Amtrak's Cardinal calls at 315 West Main Street three times a week.

Safety

Very safe for a small resort town; the real risks are mountain-road ice in winter, patchy phone signal in the hills and the resort gate turning you away without a booking.
  • The resort is a gated property: non-guests need a day pass, a dining reservation or a tour booking to get past the gate — confirm before you drive in.
  • The bunker is only seen on a guided tour; tours sell out and can be suspended without notice — book ahead and re-check the day before.
  • Amtrak's Cardinal runs three days a week, not daily; a missed train can mean a long wait or a drive.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the surrounding hills; download offline maps before leaving I-64.
  • Winter ice on US-60 and WV-92 mountain curves is a real hazard; drive in daylight if you are not used to it.
