Calgary is a tiny village on the west coast of Mull: a white-sand beach, a ruined cleared village above it, and almost nothing else. There is no shop, no fuel and very little accommodation, so most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the B8073 between Tobermory and the west coast, or sleep in nearby Dervaig. The village gave its name to Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

Getting around

You need wheels, at least a bike: it is five miles between Calgary and Dervaig and the bus is infrequent. West Coast Motors Bus 494 runs from Tobermory via Dervaig to Calgary, about 40 min, three times Monday–Friday and once on Saturday. The Ulva Ferry minibus runs twice Friday–Sunday down the west coast to Salen, where it connects with the 95/495 bus to Craignure. See calgary public transport for the current timetables.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads, weather that turns fast, midges and having no phone signal. Tell someone your route and carry water.

  • The single-track B8073 (≈ US$11,000) has passing places: pull in and let locals past.
