VaǔkavyskВаўкавыск

Skip unless you are tracing Belarusian history or visiting family: the town's main draw is a grassy hill where the medieval settlement stood, and you can see it in 1–2 hours.

Vaǔkavysk is a small railway hub in Grodno Oblast with a single notable sight: the Swedish Hill, the grassy mound that was the original medieval town. The 19th-century St. Wenceslas' Church adds a quick stop. Most travellers will find the town too quiet for a dedicated trip; combine it with a drive through the region or skip it for Grodno or Mir.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Belarus ↗Check your own government travel advice for Belarus before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Belarus ↗Land crossings from Poland, Lithuania and Latvia open and close on short notice; confirm the crossing on the day with that country's border guard.
  • Belarus ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Belarus before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Belarus is under authoritarian rule; follow your government's travel advice. Petty crime is low in small towns, but keep valuables out of sight.
  • Check your government's travel advice for Belarus before planning any trip.
  • ATMs and card acceptance may be limited; carry some Belarusian rubles (BYN) in cash.
  • English is not widely spoken; a phrasebook or translation app helps.
