Roermond sits where the Meuse and Rur meet, in Limburg, about 30 minutes by train from both Eindhoven and Maastricht. Two things pull visitors: a compact, car-free historic centre with a Gothic cathedral and Romanesque church, and the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, one of the country's biggest shopping draws. The Maasplassen lake district around it is the largest water-sports area in the Netherlands. Most people come for a day of shopping and a walk, and one night is enough unless you are here for the water.

Getting around
The old centre is car-free and small enough to cross on foot in 15 minutes. Roermond station is a 5–10 minute walk from the Markt; the Designer Outlet is about a 15-minute walk from the station, with shuttle buses between outlet, centre and car parks. Regional trains (Arriva) and intercities (NS) link Roermond with Eindhoven, Maastricht, Heerlen, Venlo, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Buses run from the station square to surrounding villages and the lakes.
