Elyria is the county seat of Lorain County, sitting at the forks of the Black River about 23 mi (37 km) southwest of Cleveland. It is a residential, suburban bedroom community for Cleveland: a small downtown, a college arts venue, and a handful of chain hotels near the turnpike. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a cheaper bed for a Cleveland trip, not as a destination in itself.

Lorain County Transit runs an on-demand service (ViaLC) rather than fixed routes, so plan around it or use taxis and rideshare.
