Lake Alfred is a small Polk County town on U.S. 17/92 between Winter Haven and Haines City, with about 5,200 residents. Its one real sight is the Mackay Gardens estate and lakeside preserve; the rest is a walkable main street, a water-ski school and antiques a few miles north. Most travellers pass through in two hours or use it as a cheap, quiet bed between Orlando and Tampa.

Getting around
A car is the only practical way to reach the gardens, the ski school and the antiques shops. Downtown itself is about a dozen blocks around Haines St and U.S. 17/92 and is walkable. WHAT Route 15 runs along U.S. 17/92 between Winter Haven and Haines City, but it covers only a mile or two in town and is not useful for sightseeing.

- The Mackay Gardens trails are marked by paint on posts and trees and some sections are narrow or uncleared — stay on the marked path.
