Arkaroola
Go for 2 nights if you have a 4WD and will book the Ridgetop Tour; skip if you are on a tight schedule or only have a 2WD.
Arkaroola is a 610 km² private wilderness sanctuary in the Northern Flinders Ranges, about 600 km north of Adelaide and 130 km from Leigh Creek, the nearest town with services. It is a single-property destination: one resort, one restaurant, one pub, and fuel availability is limited, so check locally before departure. You come for the guided Ridgetop Tour, the dark-sky observatories, the geology and the Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby. Without a 4WD and a booked tour, the drive is not worth it.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
Everything in the village is within a few hundred metres on foot. To see the sanctuary you need a 4WD, either your own or a guided tour. About 100 km of 4WD tracks; some are rated Extreme 4WD Conditions and need a sturdy vehicle, not a soft-roader. There are very few 2WD tracks and they are not advisable.
