Dumbarton is a Clyde-side commuter town 25 minutes by train from Glasgow, useful mainly as the first cluster of beds on the road to Loch Lomond. Two sights carry it: a volcanic crag castle with 557 steps, and a 100 m Victorian ship-model testing tank. The town itself is post-war sprawl; plan around the two sights, not the streets.

- Citylink coaches to the Highlands stop at Barloan Toll on the A82, not in the town centre.
