Richland CenterRichland Center, Wisconsin
Give Richland Center half a day: Frank Lloyd Wright's A. D. German Warehouse, a walk on Court Street, then drive on. Sleep here only if you want a cheap base for the river valley.
Richland Center is a small Wisconsin River Valley town of about 1,200 people, best known as Frank Lloyd Wright's birthplace. The one building that pulls travellers off US 14 is the A. D. German Warehouse, the only Wright design in his hometown. Everything else is a compact Main Street with a gallery, a book-and-drink shop and a bowling alley. It works as a two-to-three-hour stop between Spring Green and Prairie du Chien, or as an overnight if you want a low-cost bed near the valley's outdoor country.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the realistic option: US 14 runs through town and links Madison east and La Crosse west. Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end, but the warehouse, the motels on Veterans Drive and the river valley sights are spread out. No local bus network worth planning around; check if you need one.

Safety
- Small-town hours: many shops and restaurants close by early evening and on Sundays — check before you drive in.
- Winter roads ice up; US 14 can be slow in snow.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on valley back roads.
- Alcohol is sold widely; Wisconsin drink-driving limits are enforced — do not drive after drinking.
