Whakatāne is a small coastal town in the eastern Bay of Plenty, about an hour's drive from both Rotorua and Tauranga, and one of the sunniest places in New Zealand. Its draw is Ōhope Beach, a 16 km coastal-and-bush walkway, and boat trips to offshore islands. The town itself is compact and walkable, but you need a car to reach the beach and the trailheads. Two nights is the sweet spot; one night only works if you are passing through on the Pacific Coast Highway.

Getting around

The town centre is compact and walkable, but public transport is limited: Baybus runs town and Ōhope services and doubles as a school bus around 08:00 and 15:00. Renting a car is the easiest way to reach Ōhope Beach and the walkway trailheads. Parking is mostly free with strict time limits.

Watch out

Safety

Whakatāne is a small, safe town; the real risks are the sea and the weather. Swim between the flags at Ōhope, watch for rips, and check the forecast before the walkway or a boat trip.
  • White Island / Whakaari tours have been suspended since the December 2019 eruption; do not expect to book one.
  • The Nga Tapuwae o Toi walkway is 16 km (9.9 mi) and can take 5–7 hours; weather changes fast, so carry a rain jacket and warm layer.
  • Some walkway sections cross pā (Māori fortified village) sites: stay on the track and be respectful.
  • There are no shopping malls between Ōpōtiki and Gisborne, so stock up on food before driving the coast.
  • One-lane bridges are common on the roads in and out; drive on the left.
