Chesapeake Beach
Go for one night, or as a day trip from Washington DC (about 1 h by car): a small bay town with a boardwalk, a railway museum and a water park.
Chesapeake Beach and its neighbour North Beach form the closest seaside pair to Washington, DC, roughly an hour south by car in Calvert County. There is no big sight here: the draw is the bay pier, the boardwalk, a small railway museum, a summer water park and seafood within walking distance of the water. Most visitors come for a single night or a day trip, and the season runs from late spring to early autumn.

A car is the practical way in and around: from Washington take MD-4 south to MD-260, from Annapolis take MD-2 south to MD-260. The two towns are about 2 km apart and walkable along the shore road; local buses are limited, so plan on driving or walking. Maryland Commuter Bus route 820 runs to Washington on weekdays only.
