Long Beach, New YorkLong Beach

Go for one beach day, or one night if you want the boardwalk at sunrise: LIRR from Manhattan is about 50 min, beach pass sold per person in summer.

Long Beach is a barrier-island city on Long Island's South Shore, about 50 minutes by LIRR from Manhattan. It is a beach town first: 3.5 miles of sand, a 2-mile boardwalk, and a walkable strip of restaurants and bars along Park Avenue and West Beech Street. Hotels are few, so most visitors come as a day trip from New York City; stay one night only if you want the beach before the day-trippers arrive.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The core is walkable: LIRR station to beach is a short walk, and Park Avenue and West Beech Street hold most food and drink. Bikes rent by the hour or day in town. Nassau Inter-County Express route 33 links the LIRR station with Beech Street and West Park Avenue toward Far Rockaway. Parking meters and lots fill early on summer weekends, so arrive before mid-morning.

Park Avenue (central)

Walkable to the beach, LIRR station, shops and most restaurants; best for a one-night stay without a car.

The West End

West Beech Street bars and casual food, 20–30 min walk or a short ride from the station; quieter, more local.

Watch out

Safety

Safe for a beach town of its size; the real risks are summer rip currents, sunburn, and the blocks west of the LIRR tracks behind City Hall, which hold nothing for visitors.
  • Summer beach access is sold per person, daily or by season: check the city's beach page for 2026 rates and dates.
  • Some nearby beaches (Lido, Point Lookout, Nickerson, Atlantic Beach) are resident-only or priced high for non-residents: check before you go.
  • Parking is tight on summer weekends: go early or take the LIRR.
  • Barrier island flooding: if a severe storm is forecast, postpone; after a storm, check conditions before travelling.
  • The blocks just west of the LIRR tracks behind City Hall are the city's roughest area and hold nothing for visitors; the station itself is well lit and patrolled.
