PortlaoisePort Laoise
Use Portlaoise as a 1-night rail or bus stop between Dublin and the south-west, or a base for the Rock of Dunamase and the Slieve Blooms. The town itself is a half-day.
Portlaoise is the county town of Laois and the busiest rail junction in Ireland's midlands, about 45–70 min from Dublin Heuston. It is a working, commuter town with few sights of its own, but it sits within 20 min of the Rock of Dunamase, the Slieve Bloom mountains and Stradbally. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a day trip from Dublin rather than a destination.

The centre is compact and walkable in 10–15 min end to end. Taxis wait at the railway station and Market Square. Car hire is available in town; a car is needed for the Rock of Dunamase, Timahoe, the Slieve Blooms and Stradbally. Local Link and Bus Éireann services cover nearby towns but run a few times a day only.
