Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

The Lizard is the peninsula that holds Britain's most southerly point, plus Kynance Cove, a working lighthouse and the Goonhilly dishes. It is a village-and-coast destination, not a town: sights are 5–15 minutes apart by car and thin on the ground by bus. Two nights with a car covers the point, Kynance and one coastal walk without rushing.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the point, Kynance, Mullion and Goonhilly are 5–15 min apart, and lanes are narrow with passing places. Bus #34 runs hourly between Redruth and the Lizard via Helston and Mullion, about 2 h end to end. The South West Coast Path links the coves on foot.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Kynance Cove

go

Door to door: About 30 min from Lizard village

Car to the National Trust car park, then a 10–15 min walk down

Railhead for London and the Isles of Scilly ferry.

Goonhilly Earth Station

go

Door to door: About 15 min

Car across the downs, about 10 min from Lizard village

The visitor centre has been closed for years; the surrounding nature reserve gives views of the dishes.

Door to door: About 30 min

Car or bus #34, about 25–30 min

Shops, more beds and the bus link to Redruth; best base without a car.

St Just in Penwith

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car via Penzance and the A3071 (≈ US$4,500), about 1 h

Far end of the peninsula; pair it with Land's End rather than a return trip.

Hayle

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Car via Helston and the A394, about 45 min

Sand and a rail stop; mostly a pass-through on the way to St Ives.

Newlyn

Car via Helston and Penzance, about 50 min

Harbour and fish; combine with Penzance in one run.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Lizard village

Walk to the point and the pasty shop; a handful of inns and guesthouses, books out early in summer.

Mullion and Mullion Cove

Bigger village, more beds and a cove; 10 min by car from the point.

Coverack and St Keverne

East side of the peninsula; quieter, good for walking, further from Kynance.

Helston

Best base without a car: bus #34 hourly, shops and more beds; 25–30 min to the Lizard.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are cliff edges, tides at Kynance, narrow lanes and patchy phone signal. Tell someone your route on coast-path walks.
  • Single-track lanes with blind corners: drive slowly and use passing places.
  • Kynance Cove car park and the Lizard Point car park fill by mid-morning in summer; National Trust members park free at Kynance.
  • Kynance beach is cut off at high tide: check tide times before walking down.
  • Swimming and cliff edges: strong currents and no lifeguards on most coves.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the downs and around Kynance.

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Lizard. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Jun, Sep · avoid Jul–Aug (crowds, parking fills by mid-morning), school holidays · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 9 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for NQY: last bus and taxi fallback, plus the Redruth rail option.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Lizard Point and the lighthouse, Kynance and the downs, Mullion and the cove, Coverack and St Keverne.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Lizard Point, Kynance Cove, Lizard Lighthouse, Goonhilly) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Tide and weather fixtures so the beach and cliff walks can go green or red.
