Middleton-in-Teesdale is a former lead-mining village of about 1,100 people in upper Teesdale, 16 km northwest of Barnard Castle, inside the North Pennines. The draw is the River Tees itself: High Force and Low Force waterfalls, moorland walking on the Pennine Way, and the old railway path up the valley. There is no station and almost no public transport beyond one hourly bus, so a car turns a rushed stop into two comfortable nights.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: lanes are narrow, quarry trucks use them, and there is no local taxi (one would come from Barnard Castle). Weardale bus 95/96 runs hourly Monday–Saturday from Barnard Castle to Middleton in about 30 min; Hodgson's 73 goes up the valley to High Force and Langdon Beck only three times on Wednesday. Walkers use the old railway path and the Tees south-bank trail.

A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are weather, wet rock at the falls and unlit single-track lanes after dark.
  • No local taxi and no station: plan the last bus or drive.
  • Quarry and farm trucks on the narrow lanes, especially the B6277 (≈ US$8,500) and B6278 (≈ US$8,500).
  • Mobile signal is 4G from EE, Three and Vodafone but poor on O2; no 5G.
  • Paths by the falls are wet, slippery rock; keep dogs and children back from the edge.
  • St Mary's Church in the village was closed for rebuilding; check before visiting.
