Houghton and Hancock face each other across the Portage Lake canal in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, joined by a lift bridge that is the gateway to the Keweenaw Peninsula. This is a small college-and-mining town pair: Michigan Tech on one side, a Finnish-heritage Hancock on the other. Come for copper-mining history, Lake Superior shoreline, winter snow and cross-country skiing, and the Isle Royale ferry. Two nights covers the core; three if you add a full Keweenaw day.

Getting around
On foot in each downtown, but the two towns are 1.5–2 km apart over the bridge and the streets are steep. A car is best for the Keweenaw, McLain State Park and the mine sites; rentals are at the airport. Neil's Cab and a City of Houghton shuttle cover short hops. Watch the Yooper Loop where US-41, M-26 and Shelden Ave meet south of the bridge: go slow, don't stop, check your blind spot.
