Give Gorinchem one full day and one night: walk the walls and Lingehaven, then ferry to Loevestein or Woudrichem. Two nights only if you cycle the polders.
Gorinchem is a small fortified town on the Boven-Merwede and Linge, roughly halfway between Rotterdam and Utrecht on the A15/A27 and on the Dordrecht–Geldermalsen rail line. The old centre is compact and walkable in half a day; the reason to sleep here is the river: ferries reach Loevestein Castle and the fortress town of Woudrichem. It works as a quiet second base for the Alblasserwaard polders, not as a substitute for Dordrecht or Rotterdam.
