Go for one night, not a day trip: boats allow only about 4 hours ashore, and Düne's beach and the cliff path need a full day.
Heligoland is a car-free sandstone island 40–60 km off the German coast, reached by boat from Cuxhaven, Büsum or Hamburg, or by small plane to Düne. Day visitors get roughly four hours ashore; one night buys the cliff path at sunset, the gannet colony at Lummenfelsen and a ferry-free morning on Düne. It is a duty-free zone, so tobacco, alcohol and spirits are cheaper than the mainland.

No cars and no bicycles are allowed on either island (federal traffic code §50). Walk everywhere; the cliff-top and harbour are linked by stairs or a lift. Düne is reached by a small passenger boat from the main harbour.

- Boats from the mainland give day visitors only about 4 hours ashore; the last sailing leaves in the afternoon.
- If the island is fully booked there is no way to travel on once the ships have sailed: book a bed before you board.
