Gjoa Haven is a hamlet of about 1,200 people on the southeast coast of King William Island, Nunavut, 250 km above the Arctic Circle. Roald Amundsen wintered his ship Gjøa in this harbour from 1903 to 1905 and learned Arctic survival from the Netsilik Inuit. The Nattilik Heritage Centre holds Netsilik tools Amundsen took to Norway and the first artefacts recovered from HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. There is one hotel, one restaurant, one store cluster and no road in. You come for the wrecks, the heritage centre and the September festival, not for a general holiday.

Getting around

The hamlet is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes; watch footing on gravel and boardwalks. Tunik Services runs taxis in the community (check the current number locally). Locals use ATVs; rental is not guaranteed. Kayaking is bring-your-own and only for people with cold-water experience.

Watch out

Safety

Violent crime against visitors is rare, but this is a remote Arctic community with limited medical care and a dry-community alcohol rule. The real risks are cold, weather-grounded flights and going out on the water without a local guide.
  • Gjoa Haven is a dry community: alcohol is not permitted within 20 km of town. Bringing it in can lead to arrest for smuggling.
  • Groceries arrive by sealift once a year and by air otherwise; food and supplies cost far more than in southern Canada. Bring some of your own.
  • The Erebus and Terror wreck site is about 90 km by boat, actively patrolled by Parks Canada and the local Inuit, with restricted access. You cannot simply turn up.
  • Weather can ground flights for days. Build slack into any onward booking.
  • Emergency services are limited; the nearest hospital care is outside the community.
