Charles Town is a small historic town of about 9,000 in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, roughly 1 h 15 min by car from Washington, DC. It is a courthouse-and-horses town: John Brown was tried and hanged here in 1859, and thoroughbred racing has run since the 1930s. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop between Harpers Ferry and the Shenandoah Valley, or as a cheap bed base with a casino attached.

Getting around

You need a car. The old town is a walkable grid — Washington St (Route 51) runs east–west, George St (Route 115) north–south, and East/West or North/South in a street name tells you the side of those two. Route 340 and Route 9 link the town to Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg and Leesburg. There is no useful local bus for visitors; taxis and rideshare are thin, so book a return ride if you drink.

Low street crime for a US town of this size; the real risks are highway driving at dusk, thin late-night rideshare, and drinking on a casino floor with no walkable hotel.
