Sian Ka'an protects about 528,000 ha of Caribbean coast south of Tulum: mangrove, marsh, low tropical forest, inland lagoons with forested petenes, and a marine strip along the Mesoamerican Reef. It was declared a biosphere reserve in 1986, named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987 and a Ramsar wetland in 2003. There are no long hiking trails; the walking is the Muyil ruins and a boardwalk to the lagoon, and everything else — lagoons, canals, reef — is reached by boat from Chunyaxché or Punta Allen. The two entrances behave like different parks: Chunyaxché on MEX 307 is a half-day of ruins, boardwalk and a canal float, while Punta Allen is 45 km of dirt road to a fishing village with boats to the flats and reef.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Muyil ruins and the lagoon boardwalk involve uneven stone and a long wooden walkway; the boardwalk itself is the easier part.
- Boat trips require stepping down into small boats from a rough shore; ask the operator what help is available.
- Punta Allen's dirt road is uncomfortable for anyone with back or mobility issues, and the village has no paved paths.
Visiting lightly
- Buy reef-safe sunblock before you arrive; the reserve bans most ordinary sunscreen.
- Use local boats and guides from Chunyaxché and Punta Allen so the money stays in the villages.
- Do not book trips that promise manatee or turtle contact; sightings should stay at a distance.
- Take your rubbish back to Tulum; nothing is collected inside the reserve.

What are the best hikes in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?
There are no long hiking trails. The walking you do is the Muyil ruins and the wooden boardwalk to the lagoon, and short paths around Punta Allen. Everything else — lagoons, canals, reef — is reached by boat.
When is the best time to visit Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?
November to March: dry, cooler and the Punta Allen road is at its best. April and May are hot but still workable. Avoid September and October, the wettest and stormiest months, when the road floods and sargassum covers the beaches.
Can I visit Sian Ka'an without a tour?
Yes, on the Chunyaxché side: take a combi from Tulum to Muyil, buy the ruin and boardwalk tickets, then hire a boat at the lagoon. For Punta Allen you can drive yourself, but you still pay the arch entry and hire a boat in the village for the water.
Do I need a 4WD for the Punta Allen road?
In the dry season most rental cars manage the 45 km of dirt, though it takes about three hours. In the rainy season standing water hides potholes and a 4WD is strongly advised.
Can I swim or snorkel in the reserve?
Snorkelling is done from boats on the reef, usually out of Punta Allen or on a Chunyaxché tour that adds a reef stop. Do not swim in the lagoons — they hold crocodiles — and check conditions with your guide on the open coast.
