Ranua is a small Lapland municipality of about 3,900 people whose one big draw is Ranua Wildlife Park, the second-northernmost zoo in the world and home to Finland's only polar bears. Almost everything else — church, museums, cloudberry market — is a short add-on. Most travellers come from Rovaniemi for a half day or one night, and the park is the reason.

Safety
- Reindeer walk on and beside the highway, especially at dusk and in winter: slow down and never swerve hard.
- Heavy snow can bring down trees and cut power; keep a torch and a charged phone in winter.
- Japan House and Saukkojärvi museum have no public transport and short seasons: check before you set out.
- Elisa has no signal in Ranua; DNA and Telia do.
