Khasab is the small capital of Oman's Musandam exclave, cut off from the rest of the country by the UAE and reachable by road from Dubai or Ras al Khaimah, by daily flight from Muscat, or by ferry. Almost everyone comes for the same two things: a dhow cruise into the fjord-like Khor Ash Sham, and a 4WD run up Jebel Harim. Two nights covers both without rushing; one night is enough if you only want the boat.

Getting around

There are no metered taxis in Khasab. Most hotels run free minivans in town, and tour agencies provide transport for cruises and mountain trips. For anything beyond the centre you need your own car or a hired one; rental cars start around RO 10 per day. In the cooler months the centre is walkable.

Watch out

Safety

Khasab is a small, low-crime town and tourists are safe walking the centre in daylight. The real risks are heat and dehydration in summer, mountain roads without guardrails, and swimming in shipping lanes — go with a licensed boat and guide.
  • Summer heat is the main risk: plan outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 16:00 from May to September.
  • Driving a UAE rental into Oman needs the rental company's written permission and the right border post — arrange it at least a day ahead.
  • Alcohol is served only at the licensed hotel restaurants and bars, and is expensive.
  • Kumzar village visits need a permit arranged in advance through a tour operator.
  • Swimming and snorkelling near the Strait of Hormuz: currents and shipping traffic are real; stay with your boat's guide.
