Chateaubelair

Half a day to see the falls and rock carvings, or a full day if you hike La Soufrière. Not a base — sleep in Kingstown or on Bequia.

Chateaubelair is a fishing village on St Vincent's west coast, the closest settlement to La Soufrière volcano. Its draws are Trinity Falls, Dark View Falls and Kalinago rock carvings. Most visitors pass through on a day trip from Kingstown (1 h by bus) or use it as the trailhead for the volcano hike. The village itself has one guesthouse and a beachfront bar; there is no reason to stay longer than one night.

Watch out

Safety

Chateaubelair is a quiet village. The main risks are the volcano hike (heat, steep terrain, no phone signal in parts) and the road from Kingstown (narrow, winding, potholes).
  • Buses from Kingstown may not run on Sundays and public holidays all the way to Chateaubelair: check.
  • The La Soufrière hike is strenuous and takes 4–6 h round trip; start early, carry water and a guide is recommended.
  • Dark View Falls and Trinity Falls are on private land; check access and any fee at the village.
