Bobcaygeon is a village of about 3,600 on three islands where the Trent-Severn Waterway crosses the Bobcaygeon River. The first lock on the waterway (1833) sits beside the oldest swing bridge on the route, and most shops, museums and restaurants sit within a 5-10 minute walk of it. It is a shopping, ice-cream and fishing stop inside the Kawarthas, not a multi-day destination.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: from the lock, Bolton Street and Main Street cover most shops, the museum and restaurants in 5-10 minutes on foot. Street parking near the popular shops is limited and traffic backs up over the bridges when the swing bridge opens for boats, so park once and walk. A car is needed for Kawartha Settlers' Village, Eganridge and the lakes.

Safety

A quiet village and one of the safer stops in the Kawarthas. The real risks are water, not crime: blue-green algae blooms in late summer, cold lake water, and poison ivy on wooded trails.
  • Blue-green algae can appear in late summer and early fall: do not swim, wade or drink where a bloom is visible, and keep pets out.
  • Poison ivy is common in wooded areas along trails and shorelines.
  • The swing bridge opens for boats and stops traffic: allow extra minutes if you are driving through.
  • Many shops and restaurants run shorter hours or close outside summer; check before you drive in.
