  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Nacogdoches calls itself the oldest town in Texas, and the claim holds up: Caddo village, Spanish mission from 1716, a street in use for centuries. What is left is compact and mostly free — a brick downtown, two 1830s houses, a university museum — set in the Piney Woods 2.5 hours by car from Houston. It is a stop on a Deep East Texas loop, not a destination on its own.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit along North Street and the university campus, and the highway strip is 3–4 km south. Local buses run on limited schedules through the Brazos District transit authority — check times before relying on them. Downtown itself is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Bigger town, more food and hotels; pairs with a Nacogdoches stop.

San Augustine

TX 21 east by car

Another old East Texas town with a historic square; half a day.

Hemphill and Toledo Bend

go

Door to door: About 1 h

TX 21 east then south by car

Lake fishing and pine woods; go for the water, not the town.

Huntsville

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

TX 21 west by car

Doable as a long day; better as a stop on the drive to Houston.

The Woodlands

caution

Door to door: About 2 h

US 59 south by car

A Houston suburb with hotels and shopping; use it as a staging night, not a day out.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / North Street

Walk to the museums, Old Stone Fort and dinner; the Fredonia is here. Best if you have one night.

South Street (US 59)

Chain hotels with parking by the highway; 5–10 min drive to downtown.

Historic-home B&Bs

Converted 19th-century houses on Lanana, Church and Virginia streets; book ahead, some take no children or pets.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime for a US town of this size; the real risks are summer heat, long rural drives at night and deer on the road. Lock the car and keep to lit streets downtown after dark.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan museum time in the middle of the day.
  • Many small museums keep short or seasonal hours — check before driving out.
  • The university cafeteria is open to the public on paper; term-time hours change, so check.
  • Distances between towns in Deep East Texas are long and phone signal is patchy on back roads.
