Ellicott City is a preserved 19th-century mill town on the Patapsco River, 20–30 min west of Baltimore and about an hour from Washington, DC. The historic district is one steep street of stone buildings, a railroad museum and a few restaurants; the rest of the town is ordinary suburb. It works as a half-day or full-day stop inside a Baltimore or Central Maryland trip, not as a base.

Getting around

You need a car. The historic district sits in a valley below the modern town, and buses are limited. Main Street is walkable end to end in about 15 min, but the hill is steep and the sidewalks narrow. Parking lots sit at the top and bottom of Main Street; on busy weekends they fill by late morning. Rideshare works but can be slow to arrive in the valley.

Safety

Low street-crime risk; the real hazards are the Main Street hill, flash flooding in the valley and deer on the roads at dusk.
  • Main Street floods in heavy rain — the valley floor has flooded repeatedly, most severely in 2016 and 2018. Check the forecast and never drive through standing water.
  • The hill is steep with uneven brick and stone sidewalks; wear shoes with grip.
  • Some Main Street businesses close early on weekdays and on Mondays; check hours before you go.
  • The Patapsco Female Institute is a roofless ruin on a hilltop — no shelter, no facilities.
