Crewe is a medium-sized town in South Cheshire built around one of the busiest railway junctions in Britain, about 10,000 people passing through the station each day. The town centre sits about a mile north-west of the station, so the two halves are separate walks. Most travellers use it to change trains toward Manchester, Chester or Liverpool, or to sleep cheaply next to the platform. The railway heritage and the Bentley factory are the reasons to linger.

Getting around

The town is compact and most of the centre is walkable, but the station and town centre are about a mile apart, so plan a 15–20 min walk each way or a short bus. Local buses (services 3, 12, 37, 38, 85) pass the station and terminate at the town-centre bus station. Taxis wait at the station. A car helps for Crewe Hall, the Bentley area and outlying villages.

Crewe is a normal English town and generally safe by day; the usual night-time caution applies around the station and Nantwich Road pubs on weekends. Watch for traffic on Macon Way and dark unlit paths between the station and town centre.
