Durango is a former railroad town of about 17,600 people at 1,985 m in southwest Colorado, between red sandstone bluffs and the San Juan Mountains. It is the base for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Mesa Verde and the San Juan Skyway. Downtown is walkable; the surrounding sights are not, so most travellers want a car.

Downtown is compact and walkable, with a free downtown trolley in season (check dates). The Durango Transit 'T' runs local bus routes. For Mesa Verde, Purgatory, Silverton or Ouray you need a car or a tour; rental agencies are in town and at DRO.

- Altitude: 1,985 m. Take the first day easy, drink water, and expect headaches if you fly in from sea level.
- US-160 over Wolf Creek Pass east of town takes heavy snow and can close in winter; check Colorado road conditions before driving.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms are routine in the mountains: start hikes early and be off exposed ridges by early afternoon.
- The narrow-gauge train sells out in summer and fall: book dated seats ahead on the official site.
