Visby is the only town on Gotland, a UNESCO-listed medieval port ringed by a 3.5 km wall with 36 towers and a skyline of church ruins. The old town inside the wall is small enough to walk in a few hours; the island around it is the reason to stay longer. Almost everything opens daily from mid-June to mid-August and thins out sharply outside that window, so time your trip or accept a quieter, partly closed town.

Getting around

Walk inside the wall — the old town is roughly 2 km long and 0.5 km wide. Bikes are the best way to reach the coast and beaches; rentals are plentiful in summer but pricey, and buying a used bike can be cheaper for a long stay. Buses run to the rest of Gotland, so check timetables before heading out. Cars are not allowed inside the city wall in summer, and taxis are expensive.

Watch out

Safety

Visby is a low-crime, safe town for visitors; the real issues are summer crowds, bikes and cobblestones, and the sharp drop in open businesses outside Jun–Aug.
  • Many sights, shops and restaurants only open until about 30 August; outside summer hours shrink or close entirely.
  • Cars are banned inside the city wall in summer — park outside and walk.
  • Only three ATMs in the old town and port area (Donners Plats, Adelsgatan, Stora Torget); most shops close 17:00 weekdays, 15:00 Saturday, closed Sunday.
  • Medieval Week (early August) and Almedalsveckan (first week of July) fill the town: book beds and ferries far ahead.
  • Sweden is largely cashless — cards work almost everywhere, but keep a card for the few cash-only spots.
