George Town is the capital of Penang state, on an island off Malaysia's northwest coast connected to the mainland by two bridges and a ferry. Its historic core, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008, mixes Chinese clan houses, Peranakan shophouses, mosques and colonial buildings within walking distance of each other. Hawker food is the main draw — char kway teow, asam laksa and hokkien mee stalls that locals argue over — alongside a well-known street-art scene painted onto the old walls since 2012.

- Pavements in the old core are narrow, uneven and shared with motorbikes: watch your footing and check both ways before stepping off a kerb.
- Some heritage houses (Blue Mansion, Khoo Kongsi) charge entry and run guided-tour time slots only: book or check ahead rather than turning up.
- Petty theft from café tables and unattended bags happens in busy tourist streets: keep bags in view.
